Baby It’s Cold Outside – the search for the perfect cocoa

Offering far more than cocoa, these spots are perfect for rainy days.

It’s finally feeling properly chilly in the city and the one thing I seem to want more than anything (yes, even coffee) is hot chocolate. For some reason this treat I once reserved for only childhood memories is now my number one warm beverage during these chilly months. So as to not break what seems to have become my blogging tradition, here is a list of my favorite places to grab a mug of cocoa and maybe get some work done while I’m at it:

  • Cocoa Bar – Lower East Side
    • while I could save the best for last, why should I leave you in suspense? Cocoa Bar is by far my favorite place to hang out, get some work done (wonderful wifi), and enjoy a cup thick, rich, and creamy hot chocolate. Choices of chocolates range from classic milk, white, or dark to the more adventurous mint, cinnamon, spicy ginger, and funky monkey. All of their cocoas can be made with a variety of milks and also taste wonderful with a shot of espresso added in. Cocoa Bar also offers a great food and wine selection with seating at their casual bar or in the main area. (21 Clinton St., b/t Avenue B and Houston St.)

  • McNally Jackson Café – Nolita
    • books and cocoa, can life get any better? I’m going to argue no. Skip the crowds of the Strand and settle down at this independent bookseller’s cafe where they make a delicious cocoa in an incredibly appropriate atmosphere. If cocoa isn’t enough to sell you on this café they have a delicious selection of soups and treats in addition to a full coffee menu. (52 Prince St., b/t Mulberry St. and Lafayette St.)

  • The Chocolate Room – Cobble Hill
    • as the name implies, this Brooklyn dessert shop is nothing but chocolate and happiness. From sweet treats to chocolate wines and beers The Chocolate Room offers an extensive menu of interesting creations and combinations. Their cocoa selection ranges from classic to spicy with dark and milk varieties. (269 Court St., b/t Butler St. and Douglass St.)
