Life In Greece And Why It’s The Best

You can ask my friends… I am always talking about Greece because to me, it is the greatest place on this earth. Life in Greece is completely different than here in America and these are my top 3 reasons why I think it’s better.

  1. The Greek people live in a very peaceful environment. Everyone in Greece is starts their day around 7/8 AM (maybe 5 AM if you’re a sheep herder) and work until 3 PM; from 3 to 5/6 PM is national nap time. In my town, all the corner stores and most café’s close so they can rest too. It literally feels like I’m in a ghost town. After 5 PM, everything resumes back to normal. Here in America, especially NYC, there is no citywide nap time nor will there ever be.

Moving on to food, my grandparent’s back yard is huge and filled with all sorts of vegetables and fruits. We have corn, watermelons, radishes, onions, potatoes, and so on. We also have a decent sized chicken coupe that provides us with the best eggs you will ever eat. Everything we put in our mouths is freshly grown from Yiayia (grandmother) and Pappou’s (grandfather) garden. Breads are freshly made every morning in the town’s bakery and we still have a milkman who delivers to us every night. My grandmother even makes her own butter and it is ridiculously good. Just thinking about this all is making my mouth water.

  3. Age does not matter; I’ve been going with my cousins in Greece since I was 15 and drinking isn’t a huge deal like it is in the states. Here, we are restricted until we are 21 and I think it’s stupid because the more you tell people they can’t do something, the more they want to do it. I hate going out in the U.S. because everyone just wants to get wasted, but you don’t need to be wasted to have a good time and everyone I’m friends with in Greece know that. But back to the age thing, my group of friends in Greece varies from 17 years old to 28 years old and we don’t think that’s weird because we enjoy one another’s company.

This summer is going to be 2 years since I’ve been to Greece and it sucks. Sometimes I need a break from my life here in America, it gets too overwhelming sometimes with the pressure you get from everyone around you; Greece is my escape.
