A Blurry Photo of an Unseeable Object

Last Wednesday, NASA released the first ever image of a black hole. But why is this photo so important?

The first image of the black hole at the center of the galaxy M87

This massive achievement was made using the Event Horizon Telescope (which is actually a whole bunch of radio telescopes across Earth). The nature of a black hole, absorbing all light that passes by it, makes typical photography nearly impossible.  This photo was taken by observing the light surrounding a black hole, it’s event horizon.

Black holes have been a staple of science fiction since the 1950s, after work on Einstein’s theory of general relativity brought the idea to the public.  However the idea was theoretical, and up until last week all visual depictions of a black hole, from Star Trek to Interstellar were interpretations of this theory.

The ability of scientists to actually look at a black hole, will allow them to discover more about these mysterious objects.
