Zerza is one of my favorite restaurant in New York City. It is located on East Village, 14th E and Avenue A.
To access the restaurant, you have to take few steps lower than the street. It brings you a feeling of looking for a secret place which I really love. The second you open the door and discover the atmosphere, you have no choice but to feel speechless and amazed. When I opened the door, the lights were very dark, there were two male dancers dancing with wood sticks on a typical moroccan instrumental song. I had the feeling I was back in Casablanca for few minutes. You can really feel the sincerity that the owners wanted to put of the place to be true with real Moroccan restaurants.
I really fond of Zerza because the place is small and never too crounded because the owner is concern to keep a very friendly and warm atmosphere so sometimes, he has to refuse some people in order not to waste the good atmosphere by crounded the place. The fact is that the owner wants to keep the place like that because every nights, there are some performances in Zerza. The last time I was there, there were the two male dancers but also a belly dancer and a candelabra dancer, which is a girl, belly dancing with a plate full of ligths on candles on her head. That is to say that the place is very typical, which I love.
Another fact that can be important for the viewers is the price. I have compare Zerza and Cafe Mogador by taking the same plates in both restaurant. Zerza is by far less expensive than Cafe Mogador and the food tastes as good as in both restaurant, so you really want to linger in Zerza, enjoy your food and have a great time.
