It really makes me laugh when people are shocked to find out that I like sports. I love fashion, but does that mean I can’t like sports? So many athletes actually care what they wear and their street style, so what’s wrong with girls liking sports if athletes like fashion? I stopped involving myself with sports for years, because of some things I dealt with in the past but over the last couple years I decided to get back into it and I’m SO glad I did.
This past weekend I went to a Knicks game at Barclays Center with my friend, which was her first game. Before this year, I hadn’t been to a basketball game in years and when I attended a game last month I felt such an excitement that I felt when I used to go years ago. I knew the excitement my friend was feeling, especially since we had seats right next to the Knicks locker room. We have been fans of boybands and singers for years so we’re all about trying to meet celebrities and athletes if we can. We’ve had the chance to meet some big names, so we don’t really get starstruck but boy did we freak out over the Knicks (specifically Porzingis lol).
We had our fan gear on ready to cheer on our team, and get as many high-fives as we could. My friend and I were on cloud 9 just having so much fun, screaming, cheering, standing, and freaking out over how close we were. I don’t know what it is about sports, but there’s something about being at a game that brings people together and makes you feel like you’re part of something special. Can anyone relate to this? Since there was nobody sitting between the locker room and us we also had no idea who would be standing around or what could happen, but we were hoping for one thing in particular.
A few days before the game I found a picture of one of the Knicks rookie players, Willy Hernangomez, take a photo with a fan as he was sitting on an exercise bike near the locker room. I sent it to my friend and we both agreed that we NEEDED a photo like that. Fast forward to game day, and we see the bike getting brought out just a few feet behind us. We were both praying so hard that at some point of this game, Willy would get on the bike and we could get that bike photo. It was already the 4th quarter and he hadn’t gotten on but suddenly there he was walking right on over to the bike. Like I mentioned before, we do not get starstruck but we got so nervous. Of course my friend didn’t want to ask first so I had to be the one to turn around to get his attention. Luckily, he’s only a rookie and not many people pay mind so it wasn’t hard to get him. He was really cool and kindly said yes to the bike picture so WE GOT IT! Mission accomplished.
Although the Knicks lost that night (not shocking given their stats) we had an amazing time at the game. We had the best seats, got high-fives from all the players, got a couple selfies and autographs and had some great laughs. I always look for any chance I get to attend a game because I already know how much fun I’ll have. Sports have once again become such a major part of my life and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love representing my favorite New York teams and players (no matter how bad or good the team is doing) and love when other fans come up to me and talk about the Knicks or Mets, the two teams you’ll ALWAYS see me representing. If you’ve never been to a sporting event I highly recommend it. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or first timer, you’ll immediately feel part of the community!
