Living in New York has many benefits as most would know. One of those benefits is having Amtrak service right in the core of the city. At New York’s Penn Station in Midtown, you have the option to catch a train to Philadelphia, Miami, Chicago, Boston, Niagara Falls, and even Canada. That’s right, you can take a train to Canada and it’s one stop on the A train from NYIT. With Amtrak, you really get what you pay for. There’s just so much more to offer with train travel when you put it up against air travel or car travel.
1. It’s comfortable
Looks a lot more comfortable than riding the subway right? Of course it is. You get reclining seats, Wi-Fi connection, and seatback tray tables in the economy seating, or Coachclass as Amtrak dubs it. It’s the perfect environment to get immersed in a good book, catch up on binge watching that show on Netflix, or getting in a good nap. Plus you can use your phone without having to put it on airplane mode or putting away to avoid getting pulled over, which means more time for selfies, Snapchat, Twitter, and the like.
2. The Cafe Car
Yeah you get snacks on the plane, but you can’t get them when you feel like it, can you? IF you need to quench your thirst or satisfy your hunger while on the road, you can’t until you find a rest stop. That ain’t the case on Amtrak. Not at all. When you take Amtrak, you have the liberty to go and get a snack or even a light meal at your own discretion. Yes, that includes coffee for those early morning departures and for those of you out there who run on it every morning. The cafe car also comes with a diner-like setup so you can spend your trip in there if you think you’d need more space to work on that business project or wanna get some study time in.
3. All this at high speeds
See the above video. Now I’m gonna let you in on a little secret. This isn’t how fast the express subways go in NYC. These trains make the express subway lines like the A train, look like a snail vs. a Ferrari. Now I’m gonna let you in on another secret. 125mph is the third fastest they can go on this stretch. These trains can currently hit up to 150mph (soon to be 165mph through New Jersey) tops on their journey from Boston to DC. Here are some of the trip times from NYC to other cities compared to the time traveled driving below:
NYC to Philadelphia
Car: Approx: 1 hour/42 minutes
Train: Approx: 1 hour/23 minutes
NYC to DC
Car (via I-95): 4 hours/50 minutes
Train: 3 hours/5 minutes
4. Take in the scenery
The closest to taking in nature you get on a plane is the air pockets and turbulence rocking your world from 30,000 feet in the air and you don’t get to take in the scenery while you’re driving because you risk getting into an accident and getting pulled over. Neither of those are a problem on Amtrak. You get to sit back, relax, and take in the scenery. This is a perfect opportunity to experience fall foliage, winter foliage, see massive shining rivers, and so much more.
Well guys that’s all I’m gonna leave you with today. Don’t wanna give up too much and ruin the experience. If you ever need plans for the weekend or you just wanna leave the city for a weekend or even a day. Go by train. I’ve done it before and don’t regret it at all. Just a heads up though, try to buy your ticket(s) in advance. Sadly Amtrak isn’t cheap, but it’s definitely worth it.
Stand clear of the closing doors please.
