Hi, my name is Jinming Li and I am from China. Today I want to show you something about The Lantern Festival. As you all know, The Spring Festival is the first day of the Lunar calendar New Year. The Lantern Festival also we call it Yuan-xiao Festival is the 15th day ouf the Lunar calendar New Year. The festival has been celebrated for more than 2000 years since the Han Dynasty. It’s the first full moon night of the year, time for people to sit together watching the moon and eat Yuan-xiao. Yuan-xiao, also called Tang-yuan in Chinese, is a traditional Chinese snack made of glutinous rice flour.
Its shape is white ball and its pronunciation in Chinese is similar to “Tuan-yuan” which means reunion in Chinese. In these Tang-yuans are always black sesame or peanuts with sugar. These make them sweet and fragrant.
The reason why we translate the festival’s name as The Lantern Festival, is the lantern parade in the night. For example in Nanjing, my hometown, our family always goes to the Confucius Temple to join it. In the lantern parade, what people do is to guess the lantern riddles, one after each lantern, weitten by Chinese poems. Sitting on the dragon boat through the river and see various types of lanterns on both sides.
Another thing you may not know is that The Lantern Festival is truly the traditional Chinese Valentine’s Day， not the day now you call it The Chinese Valentine‘s Day. Because in the past, Chinese women were not allowed to go out door freely, only the festivals they can go out with their friends. So The Lantern Festival is the best time for the unmarried to find their companions, also time for the lovers to meet each other.
That’s what I want to show you in 2017’s Chinese Lantern Festival.
