As a film major, I watch a lot of movies and television. Probably more than I should, honestly.
Netflix, in my opinion, is the best place to get quality TV and movies. The problem some people face when they use Netflix frequently is that you find yourself not knowing what to watch. There are so many titles, and you have already watched so many (and some just seem terrible) that you can just scroll for as long as it would have taken to watch something. I want to help you out.
Here is my list of movies and shows that I think are definitely worth watching on Netflix.
How I Met Your Mother – This show needs no explanation, its just great, please watch it if you haven’t.
Friends – Again, no explanation needed, just watch it.
Black Mirror – It is like the modern-day Twilight Zone, each episode explores a different sci-fi world/idea, so no story line through a season, no need to watch in order. This show is extremely well done, from production value to writing, each episode feels like a blockbuster film but 45-60 minutes.
Archer – Animated show that involves a narcissistic, alcoholic, sociopathic secret agent who is the son of the money hungry head of the agency. It is absolutely hilarious, littered with intelligent humor and obscure references.
Arrested Development – A very wealthy family full of incredibly selfish individuals find themselves going broke due to illegal actions. Jason Bateman and Michael Cera should be enough of a reason to watch this show, it is consistently funny and no amount of nitpicking can predict what is going to happen next in the show. You might not want to watch the last season though, after Netflix bought the show, it went downhill.
Narcos & Breaking Bad – I shouldn’t lump these shows together just because they are both about drugs, but they are both seriously amazing. You will find yourself needing to watch multiple episodes in a sitting. DO NOT START EITHER OF THESE SHOWS DURING MIDTERMS OR FINALS.
Stranger Things – FOR THE LOVE OF GOD JUST WATCH IT.
Pulp Fiction – Quentin Tarantino, John Travolta, Samuel L Jackson. Just watch it…please.
John Dies At The End – Who knows if he actually does, but this movie will throw you through a loop. It is incredibly weird, sometimes shocking, sometimes stupid, but consistently entertaining.
O’ Brother Where Art Thou – Three fugitives running through the south in the 1930s. A lot of weird, or hidden humor, and a pretty great story. Plus, George Clooney plays a smart-ass who is obsessed with his hair.
John Mulaney: The Comeback Kid – Amazing stand up special, John Mulaney is insanely funny. I believe this special has an Emmy nomination for best writing. He is now doing a comedy show on Broadway with Nick Kroll called Oh Hello, On Broadway.
Kung Fury – Super weird short film made by some Swedish nerds who you can tell are trying really hard to hold in their accents. This movie is like a 1980s martial arts film on a bunch of acid.
Frank – Really hip film that follows a rock band fronted by a guy who is literally always wearing a fake head. It seems silly but it touches on some real issues, definitely worth a watch.
So that is my list. I know that the descriptions are lacking and I definitely left out some good titles, but I hope that you get something out of it. Maybe next time you’re looking for something to watch you will think of one of these instead of searching for a half hour.
