Every year whenever the end-of-the-year holidays come around, I always seem to feel somewhat upset. I guess it’s because I don’t really have family here, besides my mom and uncle, everyone else lives back in Colombia. My relationship with my father has also become very difficult in the last 3 years so we don’t really talk much anymore. I find myself being a bit envious of others that have the opportunity to spend it with family company. As much as the situation may bother me, I try to focus on the other aspect of the holidays that get me in a great mood.
Number One on my list is definitely the decorating the house for the Holidays. Personally nothing is more exciting to me than bringing out Christmas ornaments, some that my mom and I have had for years and decorating our apartment. Also, you can’t forget the Christmas lights!! They belong everywhere, on the tree, in your room I feel like it makes our apartment so homey and welcoming during the season.
Number Two is the smell of Christmas trees. This is my ultimate favorite part of the season. If you or your family don’t use a real tree, nooo problem. Fresh Balsam candles will do you justice! The smell is just so fresh and relaxing but if you happen not to like it, there are plenty of other scents to choose from. Scented candles are also a great way to emphasize a season and usually put people in festive moods. They can usually be placed any where so it’s also very convenient.
Number Three is the art of baking and drinking hot cocoa. Whether you prefer cookies, brownies, gingerbread, or cake, baking during the holiday season is a must! It’s a fun activity to come together whether it be with friends or family and enjoy an afternoon. Also, no other drink screams Christmas more than hot cocoa, especially after an epic snowball fight. Talking about this is already making me crave the sweets.
Number Four is one of my favorite things to do each winter, ice skate. I absolutely love ice skating, to me, it’s such a liberating feeling, having the cold wind on my face as my feet glide across the ice, I feel free. Plus, it’s also funny to see my friends fall on their butt’s at times. There are a few places to ice skate in New York City, they include Bryant Park, Wollman Rink, and Rockefeller Center.
Number Five ugly Christmas sweater parties should be on your to-do list. Whether it’s to get together to watch some Christmas movies or go bar crawling, getting a group of your closest friends and wearing vintage “ugly” christmas sweaters is a totally fun idea.
Number Six … PRESENTS! Enough said.
