Wicked the Musical has been on Broadway for more than 10 years and I finally got the chance to see it! Wicked is the prequel to the Wizard of Oz. It was one of the most amazing Broadway shows I have ever seen!
Here are the reasons why you should see it…
1. The Music
Every song is well written and super catchy songs, that you can’t help but sing along to. The composer of these songs is Stephen Schwartz, who also wrote the songs for Pippin and Godspell, a veteran to Broadway music. He is a lyrical genius! Wicked has many classic songs such as “The Wizard and I” and “Popular.” My favorite is “Because I Knew You” which the two main characters sing. It perfectly describes the relationship between two best friends.
2. The Answers to”The Wizard of Oz”
All the questions we had after watching the classic fantasy movie will all be answered! Like how did the Wicked Witch of the West become so evil? Why does Dorothy get her famous red shoes? Why do the flying monkeys have wings?
3. The Spectacular Stage
The set for every scene is different and filled with many details. For a ballroom set they have gorgeous cascading stairs and a big chandelier. On top of the stage they have a very realistic dragon. It moves and blows steam. You could see the contrast in their character through their clothes. Galinda wore sparkles and girly dresses the whole time, while Elphaba is super dark and mysterious
4. Insane Acting
The actress who played Galinda did a great job of playing the perky and ditzy blonde. She really used her voice and facial expression to transform into a realistic queen. The actress who played Elphaba really made the audience feel bad for her throughout the play. You could hear the pain loneliness her character was going through so clearly. They both were really funny characters together. Which made the show really fun to watch!
