Like brunch and desserts, happy hours are a New York necessity. Every day of the week hundreds flock to bars and restaurants, often near work, to indulge in cocktails and craft beers marking the end of a long work day. I personally go to a weekly happy hour with a group of friends each Wednesday after class. Every week we make it a point to try some place new, usually in the East Village. Most recently we went to Dream Baby, a cocktail bar in Alphabet City that his its menu written on an antique mirror offers half priced cocktails during their 5-8 happy hour(s). In addition to the literary themed cocktails, the bar also offers insanely plush seating areas that can accommodate larger groups, plus a decent sized bar.
Dream Baby isn’t the only place in the village to snag a good half-priced speciality cocktail, here are a few of my other top picks:
This is usually a late night spot for me, but my friends have recently started going for happy hour (half-priced cocktails from 5-8). The bar is located right off of Tompkins Sq. Park, down a flight of stairs, and is the first of two bars on the right. I recommend siting in the nook on the far left and sipping on the Handsome Devil (tequila, lime, and lavender honey).
If you’re into classic tattoos and craft beers blended with a little Kanye West then Proletariat is the perfect bar for you. With a beer selection that changes weekly, this small bar in the Ukrainian Village packs a punch. During happy hour, 5-7, they offer half priced glasses on select beers, but whether you’re there for happy hour or not and even if you’re not the biggest beer drinker I can guarantee you’ll be able to something to sip on.
This Cuban restaurant turned happy hour dream is located right off of Tompkins Sq. Park, behind a velvet curtain, and up a flight of stairs. The décor is very old Havana meets New Orleans and the libations are even better. For their happy hour (5-7) they have a rotating menu of two to three speciality cocktails for $7 and half priced punch bowls. I definitely recommend going for the punch bowl (any and all of them) and having a couple appetizers, like their pork belly sliders or coconut shrimp, to go along with your drinks.
While these are just some of my favorite spots, I’m always on the hunt for the next best happy hour and I’d love to hear some of yours!
