The first day of school was on Wednesday the 7th of September. I woke up excited and prepared for a new year at NYIT
Earlier that morning, there was a post on Rihanna’s Instagram account. The caption read “Find this spot in Brooklyn! The first 500 to #ShowUp from 4:30pm EST win free tix to see me at #GCFestival n Central Park 9/24!
Anyone who knows me knows that I have a Rihanna obsession.
So naturally when my roommate sent me a text during class telling me that we could get free tickets to see Rihanna and Kendrick Lamar if we left in the next hour I was on board no questions asked. My first class ended at 12:30 and my second started at 12:40. So here I was walking towards my second class trying to convince myself that I did not need Rihanna tickets. On my right shoulder I could hear an angel telling me:
What are you thinking?
You can’t be seriously considering this?
It’s the first day of classes.
You can’t miss this.
What if you miss something important?
And on my left shoulder I could sense the devil smiling telling me:
It’s only the first day
What do you really learn on day one? Nothing!
It’s Rihanna! You know how much you like her.
When will you ever get such an amazing opportunity?
Go on girl! Get yourself tickets to see Rihanna.
You can guess what I did. I went to my next class and had a blast.
Psych! I turned around and raced to meet up with my roommate and made our way to Brooklyn. Excitement rushing through our bodies as we got closer to the location. We froze. We thought we came early but boy were we wrong. About 200 people had beaten us to it. Luckily the post said the first 500 and we made it in the cut.
So we waited in line in the hot sun, burning, and starving for over 4 hours. The only thing that kept us going was the thought that we would get to witness magic being made. Finally the line started moving at around 5 pm and we got our Global Citizen’s tickets.
Now my friends were wondering why on earth we would skip class to stand in the hot sun for over 5 hours and there was only one answer that made any sense; Rihanna.
Last Saturday was the Global Citizen’s festival. We got ready by 11 am and made our way to Central park, Yes to stand in a never ending line again and wait. We finally got into Central Park and sat on the grass waiting for the festival to start. Our beautiful Host Hugh Jackman and Chelsea Handler went on and got us hyped for the performancers and speakers.
And of course Rihanna was the final performer.
And yes she was fashionably late.
Not only did I get to see Kendrick Lamar and Rihanna perform, but I also got to see speakers talk about the things they cared for and believed in. Among those speakers was the former president of Tanzania Jakaya Kikwete (and if anyone knows my background, I grew up in Tanzania)and that was a beautiful moment for me.
I would recommend that you get yourselves some tickets for the Global Citizens Festival next year because it is a wonderful experience.
