My mom works a lot. She has two jobs and by no means is my family is such a poverish state where we need the extra money in life to afford the things that we couldn’t before. We have enough, more than enough and I thank God, Allah or whatever god you praise to every morning. To play the role of devil’s advocate for you, yes, I am in debt and nearly drowning in college loans but as a college student in New York City, a good percentage of Americans pursuing a college education are in the same situation as I am.
I am okay with being in debt. Being in debt means that I can get a proper education, a house, an apartment, a car, a credit card. Being in debt has been a way of life. It is so much so that not owing money is abnormal and a luxury that I can not afford. As personal opinion in this matter varies, I feel like the system is designed for us to owe money. For an average person being raised in a middle class family that brings in a stable income, I can honestly say that there is no luxury in life you can have without someone asking for your credit score or how much you make or if there is a possible co-signer. I have come to except that this is the norm.
See, picture this you want this car but in order for you to have this car you need credit. Why can’t you just get the car? Unless you have $100,000 or more to spend on a car then by all means pay the full amount and enjoy your 2016 Mercedes Benz. But for the rest of us who does not have this luxury takes out loans. In order to take out a loan you need to have good credit. Now, don’t quote me on this but credit it a fancy way of saying “we need to see proof that you can spend the money I lent you and pay it back on time”. And when you spend money that not your’s, you are in debt to the person who lent you the money.
This example can applied to a number in things in life widening the pool of people who are in debt.
So if you owe money to the government, the state, your credit card I will personally stand and salute you because not only are we all in this together but we are one in the same.
