This past Friday was NYIT’s biggest event of the year, Relay For Life. I successfully ran the 12 hour event, and I can honestly say although I’m not 100% satisfied because the weather wasn’t great, but the event was still a total success! I was also told that it was the most smoothly run Relay NYIT has had in years. Hearing that was a relief.
I was very nervous for the event, being a Freshman and having never attended the event before, but thankful I had an awesome friend, Courtney, who attends NYIT Old Westbury and was able to help me a lot. She had help run the event for the past 3 years and helped me figure things out. However, by the end, she was asking me a ton of questions on how I wanted to run things! Also, she’s a senior, so it looks like I’m on my own next year! But, thankfully she was incredible, and taught me a ton and now I know what to expect in the years to come.
Being that I used to have a huge public speaking fear, never in a million years did I picture myself on stage speaking about the effects of cancer and sharing personal stories with hundreds of people. But, life throws surprises at you and I guess that getting over my fear was one of them! But, I’m glad the way it came about was for such an amazing cause. I think I did well and was able to run the event without any issues.
We had Greek life from both campuses put on a bunch of performances for us as well as Dance Club and the Cheerleaders, and they were all fantastic and incredibly entertaining. Especially when we had a few NYIT administrators get on stage and do the running man! We also had a stunning live band perform the whole time, and tons of food, games, a bouncy house obstacle course, tug of war, Zumba, and competitions.
However, the point of this event was to raise awareness of Cancer, which we successfully did. We had a very emotional dance tribute performed by NYIT Manhattan’s Dance club, and we had multiple cancer survivors walk a survivor lap. We were all raising money for cancer research, and we BROKE OUR RECORD!
That’s right, NYIT raised $40,161 for cancer research! A new record!
The night was a total success and we had a ton of fun. Although I’m relieved the stresses of planning and running the event are over, I cannot wait o next year now that I know what to expect!
