I met my roommate the July before the fall semester started my freshmen year. We had gotten the letters that told us our new roommates name and email address, so we had emailed a few times and asked questions to get to know each other.
We found out about a year later that we lied in a lot of those questions. We toned down our personalities by 50%. After our first year was over, we decided to move into apartment together with another girl on our floor because we are both crazy enough to handle each other.
It’s been a long road, and we’ve watched each other grow a lot. Freshmen year had a lot of ups and downs, and we bonded a lot through that. Our decision to get an apartment together forced us to grow up and really learn the process of renting a place.
Now, it’s been three years, and we’re still really good roommates. We have a way to talk out almost every argument there could be, and always make sure everything is okay with the other person.
But the new apartment I’m looking for is with another one of our friends, not her. It’s going to be sad to leave and not live with the one constant person I had the entire time I have been in New York City. But I have a feeling this is a really good idea for the both of us. We’ll still be great friends, even if we’re not forced to see each other every day.
