Over the weekend, I downloaded a game called Sunset Overdrive for free on my Xbox One through games with gold. I usually download every free game that is released through this perk you receive when you purchase an Xbox live gold membership. Before I actually played the game, I asked a couple of my friends if they actually heard of or played this game. To my surprise, most of my friends not only heard of the game, but they’ve actually played it and said it was really fun. After all the praise from my friends, I was still skeptical about the game solely based on the fact that I haven’t heard much about it.
I finally booted up the game and I instantly noticed that it was super colorful and energy-filled. If you don’t notice just yet, they make it very evident when you create your character in the game. You are presented with a variety of different crazy hairstyles, hair colors, and clothing you can choose from. It practically forces you to not be boring.
After customizing your character, they present you with the plot of the game. You are at a launch party for a soda called Over Charge Delirium XT created by FizzCo. At the party, you are cleaning up trash left by other partygoers. Eventually when you go to the back to throw out garbage, these weird creatures come out of nowhere and start chasing you. After you manage to escape, you soon realize that these creatures, called OD, are taking over the whole town. After beating a few OD with a crowbar, you need to stake out at your apartment for two weeks before being saved by a fellow survivor named Walter. He explains that the the OD are humans who have transformed as a result of of drinking Overcharge because the drink went unregulated through testing. Once you are armed and ready, your job is to kill as many OD as you possibly can and find a way out of the post-apocalyptic Sunset City.
So far, I believe that Sunset Overdrive has lived up to the hype that my friends have given it. Grinding through Sunset City while shooting up OD has been surprisingly fun to this point and I’ve only just begun. An aspect that I really enjoy is the fact that it reminds me of the movie Deadpool not only because of the frequent witty jokes, but also because the characters are aware that they are in a game, which isn’t too common for a video game. In the end, I have had a great amount of fun playing Sunset Overdrive to this point and I can’t wait to finish the game just as I did with Grand Theft Auto V. So if you’re looking for a new fun game to pick up for the Xbox One and Sunset Overdrive sounds like your kind of game, keep it in mind and let me know if you ever decide to get it!
