New Year, New Me!
For the first time in my life, I have kept a promise to myself. That promise was to join the gym after January 1st, 2016. It was my new year resolution. We are all familiar with these aren’t we? Making plans to be a better person and make better choices. Its so easy to screw up and not try, but putting effort into improving the people we are takes time and in the end we feel better and see results. Well, that’s my opinion, but I believe the same may apply for many of you.
Committing wasn’t easy.
My first day in the gym was terrible. I walked in and was intimidated by all of the fit shirtless men who stared back at me. Maybe they wondered by I stared or were surprised to see me since there were hardly any women in there. I mean it! The only women that I saw were the receptionist and the cleaners. I thought, where do I begin? Most of the machines are taken and the available ones are right next to someone working out. I wasn’t used to being that close to anyone while sweating. My plan was to attend three times a week, but I was so uncomfortable working out in front of other people that I went only once a week. I would go to the cycle room and ride for an hour.
That went on for about a month. Then, one day while changing in the locker room, I over heard a conversation between two women. One lady said, “I noticed women only do leg exercises. They really aren’t accomplishing anything, not gonna see results on those tummies.” I immediately looked down and grabbed my stomach. I felt embarrassed and stupid. I was letting people who I didn’t even know affect my decision to improve my body. I wasn’t sure if that woman’s statement was a subliminal message or if she was just speaking to a friend. Either way, it helped me and since that day I have been to the gym at least two times a week, not as uncomfortable, and attending zumba classes.
To really commit to this lifestyle change and pushing myself to go beyond the gym, I have subscribed to Shape magazine. Every month I get updates on the latest workout gear, new tools, and techniques to get a beach body!
