First off, I’d like to say that Disconnect was a really great movie. Second, who knew Marc Jacobs could act (he did a pretty decent job for the small amount of time he was shown)? That was random. Anyhow, I remember watching it about a year ago when it was on TV but I only saw the ending and never got a chance to see the beginning and middle. This movie tastefully highlights the real dangers of the internet. I like how there was a range of stories, from the guy who is a sexcam performer, the two teenage boys catfishing and basically cyberbullying that poor guy, to identity theft from the ‘lonely’ guy from a support group chat room. A lot of people don’t know how scary the internet can be. Most people are pretty oblivious to the fact that there are a bunch of ways that hackers can obtain information of their victims without having to break a sweat. It can happen to anyone, really, but most people aren’t careful at all. I believe that it’s important for anyone who uses a computer to watch this movie.
It’s absolutely crazy how you can be anyone you want to be when you’re behind a computer. I’ve always acknowledged that, even back when I was a pre-teen with a MySpace profile. I would always accept friend request from people who looked like they stole their profile pictures from other people, but who cares, it’s just MySpace! (so 12 year old me thought years ago) I’ve also always been aware of the dangers of the internet, so I would never actually hold conversations with strangers who I didn’t know. Sadly, Ben wasn’t aware of it, got caught up and things didn’t end so well. The scene where his mom saw him in his room ‘doing homework’ broke my heart. It sucks that he never got a chance to tell anyone how he felt. Ben’s story was my favorite in the movie. There are so many people who cyberbully others and it disgusts me. Some people can handle it and find it easy to let it go, while others just like Ben, just don’t know how to get past it. It’s a really scary thing. The scene where his sister found him really hit hard and I hope that the scene would prevent anyone from cyberbullying anyone ever again. Hopefully everyone will learn how dangerous and potentially fatal the internet can be.
