Soooo there is a lot of controversy with the Electric Daisy Concert and EDM music. Every year, EDM lovers gather at Metlife Stadium (which is in Rutherford, NJ not NYC don’t even get me started) and dance to djs and their sets for two days for EDC New York. Now, for those of you that do not know, EDM stands for Electric Dance Music. The fans of EDM are pretty defensive when it comes to their music and, frankly, I can see why. I love music period. Any type of music that makes me feel good, I love it. I can go to any music festival and find at least one song that will stay with me forever. I have week-long periods in my life where I can be totally obsessed with a song or artist. EDM music I like too, because the beats are sick and really easy to listen to, for a while. I don’t like hearing EDM, house music for too long though. Which is why I am going to EDC for just one day. My friends talked me into it really, but for a long time I wanted to try it out. I’ve been to a lot of music festivals but have been waiting for the day where I would actually spend the money to go. The group of friends I am going with are probably the best people to go with because they are just like me, not too overly obsessed with house music.
The controversy is not the music itself but for the events. In 2010, EDC Los Angeles had a lot of criticism because they were letting in kids under the age of 16 into the event. Numerous people were taken to the hospital and a 15-year-old died after taking MDMA, or Molly, a type of Ecstasy. Till this day, EDC Los Angeles upped their security and only allows people over the age of 18 to enter. In 2013, EDC New York had two tragedies, when two teenagers were found dead after taking the drug Molly as well, one of them was extremely dehydrated. Molly has been an ongoing fad with the younger generation, however, a lot of teenagers have died because they misuse the drug. Personally, I like to go to music festivals sober because I can actually enjoy the music rather than forget I even went at all. Yeah, sure, I’ll have a beer or three but I’m 22 years old and I should know, by now, how to handle myself. Drugs don’t appeal to me, I hate the way people act on it and how they are after the high wears off, so I try to stay away from that mess.
As for EDC New York, I’m pretty excited! It’s my first time and I got the day off and it’s much needed after a long, stressful semester. Now all I need to stress about is what am I going to wear!!!
But my advice for all you festival goers:
1. Be smart
2. Drink water
3. And don’t take drugs from strangers (yes I know its appealing because drugs are expensive but goddammit be smart).
