My absolute favorite genre of movies to watch is documentaries. When HBO started advertising for Going Clear, I knew it was going to be my kind of movie. Before the movie even came out I bought the book and delved right into that. Going Clear centers around the disturbing facts behind Scientology, and although I am am avid reader, this tale is told best in a visual format. Something as crazy as this story is made for a TV screen. I knew Scientology was a bit out there in their ideology, but my god I had no idea the depth of it.
I will not give away too much information, but I will let you know this is a story that includes brainwashing, abduction, holding cells, secret hideout locations, and dozens of years filled with absurd stories. I have my own feelings towards religion as a whole, however I highly respect everybody’s beliefs as long as it is not hurting anybody. When hearing the stories about what high officials of this religion do, I realized I could not be okay with anything this religion does to its members. Members who have escaped and told their stories tell the same tales involving emotional and physical abuse.
It was also nice to see them cover the celebrity side of the religion and explain why so many of them are drawn to the Scientology church as opposed to any other religion. I was also really drawn to the stories involving Nicole Kidman and her issues to the religion. Overall, this is a must watch for anyone who loves an interesting, and sometimes creepy, story!
