Winters Wake began with three high school students James Battle, Chris Warner, and Chris Surace. Their passion for writing Vikingesque songs grew with age and they never gave up no matter how many musicians they tried out. If there was a show to be played they would train their drummers to be ready in time.
Ive been a member of Winters Wake since January 2015 and even though we practice once a week, we get so much work done and have a great time playing together.
It was for this reason that I felt I owed something to this band being a newcomer and all.
Since Im a graphic designer, I noticed the bands lack of brand identity. I quickly got to work on the logo asking them which elements that should be incorporated. They wanted Celtic Knots, a Yellow moon and Viking horns. I thought to myself that this was too many elements. but I began sketching to see if there was something I could work with.
This was my first sketch. I wanted the knots to create a border and the moon to fit in the middle of the 2 W’s
I still couldn’t find a use for the viking horns
I realized that the ends of the W’s could become horns. This treatment really bought things together but the whole thing seemed too flat for me. I wanted the knots to look like metal, and the moon to have a craters. I didn’t go too heavy on the shading so that the logo can be reduced to a small size and still be seen.
We just got patches made to sell at shows and are very pleased with them. The logo will also be applied to the drumhead, the backdrop, CD’s, flyers, stickers, shirts, and hopefully shot glasses.
