Chinese new year is more complicated than the American new year. This is the 25th CNY I have in my life and I’m still not done learning how to have the CNY in the right way. It’s like the biggest project for the Chinese people to have every year. Now let me teach you some of the rules during the Chinese new year.
First of all, Chinese new year based on the Chinese calendar, which means there is no especific date for Chinese new year, every year is different. And it is not just for that one day; it lasts for 15 days every year.
One day before the Chinese new year, every families have to clean their house in and out, throw all the garbage and have to shower before 12am. We have to wear new clothes after we shower; even change the bed sheet. Once it passes 12am, people not supposed to shower for the next 24hours until it passes the next 12am. Also people can’t throw out anything in their house within that 24hours either. And when we have dinner on the first day of the Chinese new year; we have to have even number dishes. Normally people will have 8 or 10 dishes; and we have to have whole fish, whole chicken, whole duck ,pig feet , dumpling, oyster and other seafood to make it in different dishes. And for the next day we not supposed to cook more food; we supposed to finish everything we have on the first day. Unmarried people always get red envoploe from the older people. If you are married then you have to give out red envoploe to whoever is younger than you. Of cause it is money inside of the red envoploe and it is always my happiest day of the year. But people not allowed to open their red envoploes until 14days later and we have to hide our red envoploes under our pillow. And for the next 14 days, we not allowed to go get any hair cut. But one thing we do for the 14 days straight is to play MJ!!!!! And that’s the most thing I remember. I haven’t been back to China to have Chinese new year for 6 years and I’m definitely going back for 2016. Now I wish everybody have a great Chinese new year!
