Marriage is the most beautiful and important event in an individual’s life, it brings a promised future, as well as memories for the newly wed couple. Weddings are unique in every culture of the world. One of these unique weddings are Pakistani weddings, which are one of the most festive in the world. They are not just small one day events, but are comparable to festivals of the world, since they last about a month. Each ceremony represents an important part of the Islamic Pakistani culture. The celebrations and planning of the wedding begins right after the marriage proposal is accepted.
There is a long list of events that happen throughout the wedding. The first event of the wedding is “Dua-e-khair”, which is an islamic tradition where the two families, the bride and groom side, come together and pray for the well being of the couple. Next comes the finalizing of the wedding dates by the families; Which is followed by the “Nikkah,” an official process of registering the marriage in the country of Pakistan according to the Islamic law. The next ten nights are dedicated to the “Dholkis”, this is when all the women of the village gather together to sing tradional songs at the beat of the “dholak”, a drum. The following day is known as “Ubtaan”, this is when the bride has a personalized spa day to prepare herself for the wedding. The “Mehndi’ is then celebrated, a night where henna tattoo also known as “mehndi” is applied to the bride and dances take place. After this comes the day of the “baraat”, the actual wedding ceremony, where the groom comes to the brides house and the bride says farewell to all her friends and family and leaves with the groom to her new house. The last event is the “valima” or reception dinner which is hosted by the groom’s family and is the day when the brides family and friends come to visit and mingle with the groom’s family and friends and create new friends and life long family bonds.
Although our weddings are about the traditions, at the end of the day everyone talks about what the bride wore. Families are scrutinized and judged but the food quality about the quality of people at the wedding and the dresses worn by not just the bride and groom but by the whole family. If you want gossip on someone or someone’s wedding, you could always count on the “desi” aunties who would pour their brains out on what they thought of each and every detail of the wedding. All in all, our weddings are about having an amazing time with the presence of your family and friends and blessings for the newly wed couple.
