Elephants are known internationally and are in many zoos around the country and also internationally they are known to be a species that is going extinct. One thing for sure though I will be saddened if the elephants do go extinct.
They are one of the smartest mammals that exist and they are quite valuable for their ivory. In china Ivory sales are going out of control and the more ivory supply that gets into china the more elephants have to be killed to supply ivory. If this keeps up the population of elephants in the world will be lower than it already is. Elephants might face the same fate as the black rhino species and become critically endangered. In the past two years over 100,000 elephants were killed; this is sad because people are hunting an animal that is already struggling to survive.
It is hard for elephants to increase their numbers in the wild because they have only one calf and are pregnant for two years. Raw ivory in china used to cost 750 us dollars and now it cost 2 thousand due to the high demand. China has been doing its best to help calm down the trade of ivory by giving over 30 smugglers life in prison. Iain Hamilton, founder of Save the Elephants said “China holds the key to the future of elephants” He also said that without China’s leadership Elephants can go extinct within a generation. I really hope this is not the case and something is don’t to save these elephants. What do you guys think about the ivory trade in China?
