The breast cancer vaccine was developed in the Washington School of Medicine in St Louis. Early human trails show that the vaccine is okay to take if you have metastatic breast cancer. When the scientist went over their research in human trials they discovered that people’s immune systems would now attack tumor cells; which help stop the cancer from spreading. They way the vaccine works is a little bit complicated most breast cancers have the protein mammaglobin-A which is found mainly in breast tissue the vaccine strengthens white blood cells to destroy cells with the mamaglboin- A protein.
The vaccine is much better than chemo because it isn’t destroying healthy cells. 14 patients were vaccinated and their were no major side effects only flu like systems and also some patients who had a weakened immune systems from chemo still had positive results. The next step is for them to test the vaccine on newly diagnosed patients.
I hope that this breakthrough will finally lead to the rapid decline of breast cancer sometime in the future. In addition I hope this will lead to breakthroughs in other types of cancers so that we don’t have to kill healthy cells with chemo. What do you guys think about the progress in Breast Cancer Research?
