As the weather gets cooler, I can’t help but wish I was on the beach somewhere! But, with winter comes alot of great new activities to enjoy around New York. So, here is a list of favourite things to do as the weather gets cooler and our skin gets paler!
1. Watch the Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting Ceremony.
This annual event is one I would recommend watching.. from far away. Thousands of people gather around Rockefeller Center to watch the tree light up for the first time. It’s really beautiful, but you have to be willing to be squashed by other people! But, every year, different artists come and perform at the ceremony. For example, last year, Ariana Grande, Mariah Carey, and other artists performed at the ceremony. This year, Lady GaGa is rumored to be singing!
For more information on the tree lighting, visit Rockefeller Center’s website.
2. Ice skating in Wollman Park in Central Park.
There are many places to go ice skating in New York, like Rockefeller Center and Bryant Park, but this one’s my personal favourite. It’s just so nice and calming to be skating in the park that you forget that you’re in one of the most busy cities in the world. Also, for those who don’t know how to ice skate, there are lessons available!
For more information, visit the Wollman Skating Rink website.
3. Walk down Fifth Avenue and admire the decorations!
Nothing get’s you into the holiday spirit like Christmas decorations. And those on Fifth Avenue are the best in the city! Department stores like Bergdorf’s and Saks have already begun decorating their windows in preparation for the holiday season. Soon, the whole are will be decorated and lit up and it looks really beautiful!
4. Drink hot chocolate at Jacques Torres Chocolates.
Believe me when I say this: BEST HOT CHOCOLATE EVER. Although many people prefer Serendipity, Jacques Torres Hot Chocolate is one you must try this winter! I never even enjoyed hot chocolate that much (two sips is more than enough!) until I tried it there. There’s no better way to stay warm this winter.
5. Visit the street markets around the city.
There are many of these street fair markets around the city all year round. But, nothing beats the ones at the holiday season. The one’s I’ve been too are the one at Madison Square Park and Columbus Circle. They have cute little items to decorate your house or maybe even give to someone for Christmas. They also usually have different handmade jewelry stands that make for a unique gift without costing too much!
