As the weather cools down in New York, I can’t help but reminisce on those beautiful summer days. During the last month of summer, a couple of friends and I decided to take a trip somewhere before we all headed back to our respective colleges. One of my friends decided we should go to an island in the Indian Ocean called the Seychelles. A few of us had already heard of the island, but others had never heard the name before. A few weeks later, we were in Seychelles.
From the moment you step out of the plane, you can already see the beauty of the island. The airport was extremely small, with only a handful of airplanes arriving everyday. The drive to the hotel was extremely terrifying. The roads had only two lanes, going opposite ways, and extremely sharp turns. The worst part was the fact that if the car was to make a turn a little too late or early, we would all end up in the middle of the forest. But, despite the deadly roads, the view from every corner of the island was breathtaking.
The Seychelles are made up of 155 islands with a population of almost 100,000 people. The capital city, Victoria, is located on the largest island of the Seychelles called Mahé. My friends and I stayed on Mahé and visited Victoria a few times. The city is fairly small. Walking through the crowded the streets, you can see that the country relies on very basic infrastructure. And, even through the crowded streets, you could still see the beauty of the island all around. One day, my friends and I decided to visit the second biggest island in Seychelles called Praslin. We went to a beach called Anse Lazio, which has been named the fifth most beautiful beach in the world. Despite the heat and strong sun, the water was extremely cool and pure. It was so clear that you could see the details of the sand below your feet.
My friends and I stayed in the Seychelles for a week. And even though we were going to kill each other by the end of it, it was one of the best trips I’ve ever been on. We spent our days hiking, snorkeling, or just lounging by the beach. Waking up every morning to the clear, blue sea surrounded by the beautiful, green mountains makes you feel like you’re in heaven.
