Brunch! The prefect combination of breakfast, lunch , and food, and fun! In terms of Brunch for this New Yorker, brunch is not only a meal served post Friday/ Saturday night celebrations..sometimes it the main event or the extension of your weekend activities. I started brunching 4 years ago! Thats when i had my first bacon and eggs combination with a side of champagne and orange juice at 2 o’clock. Over the years my brunch has elevated to bottomless drinks and weekend social events. Since my must recent time living New York this has drastically changed. The day I walked into “Epsteins” in the Lower East Side and brunch was more like breakfast and dancing on tables.
Yes for those of you that don’t know, any meal in New York can turn into a party…especially Breakfast. The Lower East side of Manhattan is filled with plenty of cheap eats and unique spots for the young New Yorker. But what i think it’s best for are it’s weekends between 11-4. During these hours restaurants fill up with unlimited brunch specials that offer unlimited Mimosa’s and Bloody Mary’s throughout your meal at a set rate. And if you pick that right right spot, well then you have basically paid entrance into a day club that serves eggs. Two places I have recently been to are “Libation” and “Epstein’s Bar” My original mission was to get breakfast after 12:00 pm. Somehow though I found myself among djs, dancing and french toast by 2:00pm.
Libation is located in the Lower East side on 137 Ludlow St, New York, NY. On Saturday and Sunday starting at 11:30 the restaurant offers brunch specials pre fixed at $19 (Saturday) $24 (Sunday) including meal and drinks. At first glance my friend and I though this sounded like very innocent way to spend our Sunday until the glowsticks came out. Towards the end of the pre fixed brunch time, the blinds go down, the dj turns the music up, and the glow sticks and mimosa meet side by side. Brunch at this restaurant turns your first meal into another version of someone else Saturday night.
Another brunch party located in the Lower East side is Epstein’s Bar on 82 Stanton St, New York, NY. I visited this place with my boyfriend at 11:30 am for a simple omelette and did not leave until a few dance contest, one direction and wings at 9:00 pm. Very unexpected, some weekends at Epstein’s Bar can turn into Bar sing a longs and table dancing. At the request of the customers, the staff will sync you music into the speaker system through the entire restaurant. While you are ordering your meals and mimosa’s, the vibe starts to change and people start to get up and start dancing. Odd and fascinating at the same time, by the end of my meal I was joining the rest of the restaurant singing to the songs played on someones iPod. In two hours time, i found myself dancing by the booth with the rest of the customers, while people outside looked through the windows in wonderment.
For those of you looking for a different way to spend your brunch Saturday/Sunday I absolutely recommend these places.
