Hollywood Studios opened on May 1, 1989. From its opening date until January 7, 2008, this theme park was titled Disney-MGM Studios. It was until this date that Disney had a licensing contract with MGM to incorporate their company name in the title of the theme park, and have working movie studios for MGM within the park.
In 2001, The Sorcerer’s Hat (shown below) was added to Disney’s Hollywood Studios as a part of the 100 Years of Magic Celebration that commemorated what would have been the one-hundredth birthday of Walt Disney. The Sorcerer’s Hat replaced The Great Movie Ride and the Earful Tower as the new icon of the theme park.
Next week, on May 1, Disney’s Hollywood Studios will be selling exclusive merchandise for the park’s twenty-fifth anniversary. These will include: four t-shirts, two limited edition pins, a keychain, pre-dressed Duffy the Disney Bear, and a messenger bag. Soundstage 1 (between Toy Story Midway Mania! and the Studio Backlot Tour) in the park will be the location selling this merchandise.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios will be home to many special events on this day, with the first beginning at 10:00am. At this time, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse will stand alongside Disney’s Hollywood Studios Vice President Dan Cockerell on stage in front of The Sorcerer’s Hat to honor the cast members that have worked within the park since its opening, and briefly rededicate the park. “Stars of the Studios” will be a unique motorcade down Hollywood Boulevard at 7:00pm. Some of the “stars” that will be present in this motorcade are: Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Captain Jack Sparrow, Darth Vader, Doc McStuffins, Wreck-It-Ralph, Vanellope von Schweetz, and Sofia the First.
