Disney fanatics constantly anticipate rumors as to what new projects will be coming to Disney Parks. In Walt Disney World, there are several rumored extensions to the Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park that would not only create a tremendous spark in the community of Disney fans, but in news headlines as well.
Disney now holds an expo every two years in California near its headquarters and Disneyland. It is titled the D23 Expo, because only members of the official Disney fan club, D23, are able to attend. The “23” of the name represents the year that the Walt Disney Company was founded: 1923. At the D23 Expos, Disney releases information about all upcoming movies, company news, and especially plans for their theme parks. With the dates recently announced for the 2015 D23 Expo, August 14-16, the amount of rumors regarding the major Disney announcements are growing by the week!
In 2013, Disney CEO Bob Iger became responsible for settling a deal with Lucasfilm, causing The Walt Disney Company to now be its owner. With this deal, Disney was given all of the rights to the Star Wars movies. Already in Hollywood Studios since 1989 has been the motion-simulator attraction, Star Tours, which is based entirely on Star Wars. Since Disney purchased Lucasfilm, there have been swirling rumors to increase the amount of Star Wars influence in Disney Parks, especially Hollywood Studios. Many different sources are claiming that the D23 Expo is going to release information about a Star Wars Land in Hollywood Studios. Star Wars Land would supposedly include new attractions, shopping/dining experiences, and forms of live entertainment. There is plenty of land to use that is behind Star Tours, which also helps make the swirling rumors seem very plausible.
The section in Hollywood Studios currently known as “Streets of America” is rumored to be replaced by what would be a headlining part of Walt Disney World. There are some who believe that the town of Monstropolis from the Disney/Pixar film, Monsters, Inc. is soon to take over this section of Hollywood Studios. This expansion and re-development project would most likely include a roller-coaster inspired by the “door vault” scene of Monsters, Inc. Seeing Monstropolis brought to life would undoubtedly be loved by millions of park guests.
