Summer is slowly (snail-pace) approaching. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m completely over this cold weather and having to pile on more layers than my body weight should have to handle.
Albeit it still is a few months away, and spring is still in the habit of playing hide and seek with us, I’ve already got my summer plans in mind. Apart from (hopefully) having an internship during the week, I plan on spending my weekends soaking up the sun and making my way to Fire Island.
Located on the outer barrier islands parallel to the south shore of Long Island, New York, is on of New York’s best beaches. Not typically crowded with tourists, in comparison to other New York beaches such as Brighton Beach, Coney Island, and Rockaway Beach, Fire Island sounds like the perfect getaway weekend destination at less than 2 hours away from Manhattan. There’s sightseeing, hiking, and nature trails to explore along the entire seashore, which happens to be considered a U.S. National Seashore. If you’re a fan of the water, there are also water-based activities such as canoeing, boating and fishing.
On of the many attractions of the island is the Fire Island Lighthouse from 1857. It is open to the public as an observatory and museum and offers amazing views of Long Island, the Atlantic Ocean, the Great South Bay, and the whole stretch of Fire Island beaches. Apparently, on a clear day, on top of the lighthouse, you can even see the New York City skyline!
Personally for me, I’m just looking forward to being on the beach and relaxing with friends, preferably with a coconut in my hand. What are you guys looking forward to doing this summer? Have any of you been to Fire Island before? If you have, are there any fun activities you’d recommend?
