Famous artist of the 19th century, Paul Gauguin is a French impressionist, nabis and symbolist painter. From the 8th mars to the 8th june, the MoMA organizes a retrospective to show all the different methods of the painter. Indeed, you can admire a lot of different kind of Art in this exhibition : engraving, sculpture and above all drawings.
In 1891, Gauguin traveled in Tahiti, looking for a peaceful and primitive world. He gonna stay there until the end of his life. The MoMA exhibition, called Metamorphoses, chose to be focus on this time of his life thas if from 1889 to 1903.
The exhibition is organized in a chronological way. The first one is “The Volpini Suite” which shows the Gauguin’s work before leaving France, in 1889. After that, it is the “Noa Noa Suite” which shows the beginning of the interest for the Tahiti universe. The most interesting thing in this exhibition is, according to me, the travel journals, and the comments on his paintingsand engravings.
You will see around 150 artwork in this retrospective which is the first one to be focus on the 20 last years of Gauguin. This exhibition gave me the desire to visit Polynesia. Have you ever been there ?
