One of my favorite activities is to watch American series.
I don’t know why, but I don’t like French realization. All the American speech are more surprising, the characters have always a great personality (you can identify yourself trough him), the suspense is unsustainable, you never know what will happened and of course but you really want to.
I am following around fifteen American series by year and only one or two are French. I don’t have the patience to wait one year to watch the series on the French TV. So I find the episode on Internet. Sometimes they are no French subtitles, it’s can be difficult to understand. But I couldn’t imagine wait two days more only to find the episodes with French subtitles. That just wonder me more attention to understand the dialogue.
Every year you follow your favorite series, but you also discover new one. This year I discover “House of cards” and I continue to follow: Breaking bad, Grey’s Anatomy, Suits, Walking dead… However, in France you don’t have new series every year and I think this is always the same type of topic: police series.
In France “CSA” is in the head of the audiovisual. They want to preserve the French culture with a good quality of programs. They don’t like to put violent series in public channel, they are not very open-minded. But if you go to private channel the programs are different. You can find a variety of program. The only problem is the price. You have to pay lot of money every week to have the access of these chains.
Growing up in the western world with my roots coming from the eastern world, I cannot help but to see the lack of knowledge both worlds have about it each other. This is not only limited to the east and the west but countries within the west don’t known much about each other and the same goes for the east. I do not believe that only upon being exposed to a new culture in a strange land is the best way to learn about other but it also takes a mind that acknowledges that the world around us is not what only exists.
This semester I am taking a graduate course titled “Art in Mass Media”, which is taught by Prof. Shundi. If you have an opportunity to take that class, I would highly recommend it because its the kind of knowledge I believe many college students should have before becoming young professionals. Going back to the class, this is one of the few classes I have taken in my college years in which the professor does not limit everything to the just the Greek or Roman civilizations. We are taught about many great cultures and how their art influences us and how ours did to theirs. It is so strange to know that we are not told about the greatness that is beyond our cities. We read history textbooks, believe that we have been informed correctly and fall into generalizing a great group of people with stereotypes.
I myself have been guilty of not taking my curiosity beyond an assigned textbook. When I was in high school, I joined a program called the Abraham’s Vision Program. In that program, Muslim and Jewish students met up once a week, visited synagogues and mosques to learn more about the other faith. Our very first meeting for the program was a great eye opener. The Muslim group was sort of surprised to see the Jewish students dressed in clothes other than the regular orthodox attire and the Jewish students didn’t know Muslims even had televisions in their houses. I know this sounds insane but to a bunch of teenage high school students who have never been exposed correctly to different culture, these questions were both sincere and valid.
Even today I come across people who cannot grasp that my last name is Hussain but I have an American accent or that I was born here. I get comments like “you’re so Americanized” or “but your last name is Hussain so you’re not really from Brooklyn….”. We like to believe that we live in a global world and that we have all the knowledge in our palms with the cool devices we carry but the reality is that we are all still very stubborn about giving up the stereotypes that were handed down to us.
Bad news for those who wants to lost weight…and good for every gourmet. The first distributor of cupcakes has been launched in Beverly Hills this year. It is the idea of the famous American channel Sprinkles.
This distributor is open all time and every day, it propose more than 600 cupcake. In few minutes you can have your cupcake delivered in a little box. It is easy to choose your cupcake. On a screen you have a big choice of cupcakes with a little description for each one, then you have to pay with your credit card. More, you can see on the screen how your cupcake is delivered to you.
