Being that this is a class about social media, I thought it would be fun to bring up (I believe we’re even having a discussion about it at the end of the semester). Social media is a relatively new tool in regards to medias that have existed. More and more businesses are even embracing social media to reach larger audiences like ourselves. Hell, I’m obviously using media to reach all of you right now.
Well, occasionally some places use social media wrong. For example, these happened just this year as I’m sure many more have happened as well.
Well, fortunately for me, I got to witness it last night first hand and even got in on the action. Last night an unfortunate event happened in New Jersey. A gunman was loose in a New Jersey mall late last night (no bystanders were injured, but the gunman took his own life). While this unfortunate event was going on, obviously people took to social media. News 12 New Jersey was covering this on Facebook.
They put out a post that instantly enraged people and then they removed it. Unfortunately I didn’t screen capture it, but I can tell you EXACTLY what it said. Their post was the following:
IF YOU ARE AT THE GARDEN STATE MALL
Send pics/video to email@example.com
Call our desk at 732-346-3270.
Now, I don’t have an eidetic memory or anything like that. The reason I know it exactly is because shortly after they posted and deleted that post. They posted a new one, which I did have the chance to get in on….be the first to reply and grabbed a screen shot. Here is what went up:
The only thing they changed was adding the line “and if its safe to do so“. As you can see, it immediately had comments…all of them negative (at least at that time). This post has since been removed as well.
So…pay attention to what you’re doing because believe it or not, you can do social media wrong.
I visited 2 advertising agency last week, one was Hill Holiday and the other one was Vaynermedia. Hill Holiday is doing more creating advertisement on print and digital and Vaynermedia is focusing on social media selling.
It was awesome! It amazed me!
I go to Hill Holiday on Monday because of my copywriting class. We met in their pantry and have about an hour of their copywriters teaching us the real world works. I was socked at the time I step in the pantry because he typical offices in Hong Kong are small but with many people. Hill Holiday’s pantry is already bigger than most of the small offices in Hong Kong. After the lesson, someone took us to have a tour of the office. The first thing she said was it has only 1 level. At that moment I thought it might be a small area with couple rooms that’s it. But when I walked through the whole level, it was big with many rooms and open space. I also saw a yoga ball and stuff. Every employees has at least 2 laptop and I saw most of them were writing an email and the other laptop was watching movie. It is so free and fabulous to work in such a environment! And I heard that they have a alcohol party every week.
I went to Vaynermedia on last Thursday because my friend were asking for feedback and investment of their CEO Gary Vaynerchuk. I wasn’t plan to go with my friend at first but my friend kept asking me so I went there. It was my pleasure to meet Gary kind of by accidentally. That was my first time to see a real meeting with business person. The meeting was quick but I learnt something. Meanwhile, Vaynermedia basically has the same style as Hill Holiday, it seems free. I saw yoga ball and basketballs.
I hope I have the chance to work in those kind of advertising agency one day!
Here is video which Gary talks about social media for sells nowadays.
We were traditionally taught not to use our electronics at school, but this week we were instructed TO log our everyday whereabouts at NYIT. My first conclusion after using social media at NYIT is that there isn’t a whole lot going on to blog about! Some of you who are more involved with our school may disagree, but coming from a previous school that was on a campus and had a much larger class size, I’ve noticed NYIT can be a little dreary. But putting that aside, I was able to capture some great moments through social media.
During my two weeks I used Instagram and Twitter. I am picky with what pictures I put on instagram so unless I felt the picture had more relevance in my life beyond NYIT, I chose to tweet about it. I chose to tweet because I really only use Twitter for this class only so I wouldn’t be annoying other friends with trivial updates about my life at school.
My first pictures was more NYIT oriented because it was taken in one of my classes, RADIO 101. My purpose of my other picture was informative for NYIT because I found a place that I love getting lunch at, that is also healthy. I did get feedback from my instagram pictures, even from friends not at NYIT. On instagram I tried to follow everyone who was using the #COMM350 so I could like and comment on their photos about NYIT.
Some of my Tweets:
My goal for the past two weeks was to share my experience with all of you of my time at NYIT. I also tried to keep it relevant to all of you by keeping it related to our COMM 350 Class. This assignment has made me be more active on Twitter. I enjoyed our Twitter convos about Disconnect although I have still not seen the movie! (Hoping I can go this week)
Today, I’m going to tell you about a great movie I saw with my classmate Annabel: Disconnect. We’ve been there because our social media teacher required us to go. And honestly, since I didn’t hear about it before, I would have never gone! So, I’m really excited about that kind of homework and class requirements!
Disconnect deals with how social media can seriously take over your life. I really appreciated the way the movie is turned. It deals with different stories and different characters that are all related at some point. Even though there is a lot of characters and stories, the spectator doesn’t feel lost since they’re all related and they all deal with social media. I thought the script was very good, and the movie was well directed and very well filmed. The actors and their dialogues were really good, and you believe what you see. It is definitely not overplayed or whatever.
Even though I don’t feel like I learned a lot from this movie, I was deeply into it! It really tensed me. I lived the movie a 100%! The title of the movie is interesting: Disconnect. It shows how social media can disconnect you from real life even though you’re constantly connected to something. I liked the fact that it doesn’t only deals with Facebook. It clearly shows that even platforms, every sort of social media can affect your life in a really bad and dark way. It shows how major it is to use these platforms very carefully. Moreover, by choosing a cast of very different people (big age differences, different social classes, professions, male/female…), we realize how everyone is concerned by this scary topic.
Anyway, I really advise you to go see this movie. It’s definitely a good one, says the pickiest girl on movies!
+ MARC JACOBS is in the movie!!! Isn’t crazy? I was so surprised/shocked! What the f* are you doing here Marc?! Loved it!
Let’s finally talk about the movie Disconnect we had to watch for the class!
I won’t tell the story for those who have not seen it yet, but just highlight some points that seem to be relevant for our social media class.
First of all, I really liked it as I had the feeling that watching this movie was not interesting only for this class but in general as this is all about current issues. This is happening now and we all are dealing with it.
Social media, as we learn, are very important, either for companies or every human being. Now we cannot work without it and we are all aware of that. However, social media have limits and they really have to been controlled otherwise everything can degenerates.
This is what we experience seeing this movie: how social media can be dangerous, either for kids and grown up people.
I loved it because it is kind of a warning as it reminds us that we have to be really careful all the time. Also, I was touched by it as it seems so real: things that are happening in Disconnect surely happen all the time. This is a current issue. I had the feeling to see the film at the perfect right moment of my life; this is happening now.
Finally I really liked the way this issue was treated: this is not too much dramatic, this is just true. That is actually why the movie is so touching; they do not use melo in order to make you like the movie, but they only use the facts and the truth.
What can I say… go to see it now!!! It’s really a great experience that you are going to remember!
Please tell me what are your feelings about the movie and let’s talk about it ! But instead of commenting here, why wouldn’t you participate in the wiki discussion I just created? Here is the link
After my Social Media professor gave a good 40minute lecture of what social media forum Reddit was, I just had to take a look for myself. What stopped me from looking into it in class was the fact that he gave us a very strict warning that there are certain contents of the website that was not for everyone I immediately understood that this was a site that gave “no holds barred” content.
Professor Scheckel told no lie. by the time I got onto the Elevator and walked out of the building I was well onto my 5th link via my Samsung tablet device. there is not one topic that isn’t featured on Reddit and this is what I have been looking for since I touched a computer.
As of right now I refuse to create an account as I know I like to rant, so I will continue to use Reddit from a spectators aspect.
When i got home, I took the time to look into things that I like that I don’t know many people are interested in. Of course my first search was MF DOOM. THERE ARE OTHER FANS!!! I was able to find videos, unreleased songs and lyrics, even quotes from the man himself from interviews you will never see on TV. By this time I have lost 2hours of my life to Reddit.
I looked into a game I use to play as a child called Runescape. I stopped playing because of the newly updated. gameplay that really made me distant to the Game. From the first link I learned that Runescape had released the older version of the game for people like me who enjoyed the old days .i have now lost 4 hours to Reddit and one hour to gaming and it hasn’t even been 24 hours since my professor told me about it.
If you don’t use Reddit.. and don’t ever what to.. Save yourself as stay away now.
P.S. Kittens are very important to people and I do know when the narwhale bacons.
Hey guys, as you all know now, I’m not a big fan of Twitter, I read an article on it and also made an effort to understand it so I figured, why not write an article about it ?
To summarize – for those who have not yet succumbed to the “joys” of this social network – the basics.
-Fist of all, on twitter, we speak English, a lot, not french. So, you can “follow” people (we follow it subscribes), and if these people appear to be less interesting than expected, just”unfollow”.
-It is not because we follow someone that he will follow us back (ex: Barack Obama, haha you wish!). And when you follow a star (ex: Zooey Deschanel) , you must ensure that the account is verified. To do that, just check if there’s a small “V” blue next to its name.
-Once this is set, the game is about saying funny things, or just sensible to its subscribers. You can also say nothing and just read the people you follow. When someone says something very funny or something that makes sens to you, you can ”RT”, meaning : “retweet” and share all the funny or meaningful content. If you find a brilliant one, it can be a “FF” or “follow Friday”. It is a practice every Friday to recommend to subscribers to follow other accounts. It is that appreciated because it’s nice.
-As the small cabalistic signs that impress newcomers, they have no magic. The # indicates a sharp discussion topic (ex: obama #) and @ indicates that you’re speaking to this particular person (@ barackobama). As for the “LT”, it means “live tweet”, if you want to comment or debate on live show.
——>Now, we can all tweet =) At least we’ll try, promise !<——-
PS : I’ve read two major rules about Twitter :
- Do not abbreviate words to bring them into 140 characters. Right less words, that’s all.
- If Mick Jagger and Sting send tweets to each other, do not interfere with their conversation as if you were Bono, the third thief.
What do you think Twitter addicts ? Do you have other rules ?
If you haven’t already heard, African-American/Mexican actress Stacey Dash (most notable for her role in the fashion 90s movie “Clueless“) came out last week stating she was now endorsing Senator Mitt Romeny in the 2012 presidency campaign election. This major news caused an uproar in the African-American and minority communities.
Stacey Dash received negative backlash through her Twitter page (@REALStaceyDash), blog sites and wherever citizens who felt the need to comment on Dash’s decision. On October 10th, Stacey Dash sat wit Piers Morgan to discuss the harmful tweets and social media threats she’s received since her coming out of supporting Senator Mitt Romney and his campaign. Stacey Dash simply states “We’re All Entitled To Our Opinions” in hopes to backup her decision. Dash is 100% Right and those who gave her one hell of a backlash were WRONG!
During the interview, Piers Morgan asks Stacey Dash, if either Senator Romney has reached out to her after she made her statement and Dash basically resonded saying “No she hasn’t heard from Romney, but Vice President in running Paul Ryan had reached out and said it was a BRAVE thing she has chosen to do“. Hmm…BRAVE. Take a look at a short 3 minute excerpt below:
BRAVE…I don’t have an issue with Stacey Dash supporting whomever she wants in the presidential election; I’m all for everyone having their own views and opinion and voting for whomever they want to vote for. My issue is the word used by Paul Ryan describing Stacey Dash as BRAVE. Stacey Dash in the interview states American Citizens are given the right in the Constitution to vote for whatever party they chose to side with; since when did voting become such a BRAVE act?!
I feel like Paul Romney made his statement calling Stacey Dash BRAVE only because he felt sorry that the most backlash she was receiving was from the African-American communities and it was his way of trying to make her feel better. Paul Ryan clearly choked on words and bit more than he could bite off with this statement he allegedly said to Dash. But why BRAVE though?
There is nothing BRAVE about stepping out and saying who you’re voting for. I feel Dash and Ryan took the word BRAVE to a whole other level. What about the soldiers who risk their lives to protect us over in Iraq; aren’t they the BRAVE ones? So why is Ryan putting Dash in that same category as BRAVE? There’s nothing BRAVE about a given right decision on voting. That’s like someone who doesn’t drink alcohol going to a winery with friends and ordering a water instead; is the non-alcoholoic BRAVE for not getting an alcoholic drink around a bunch of people who tend to take a sip of wine here and there?
I Respect Stacey Dash’s Decision But BRAVE Just Wasn’t Meant To Be Used For Her Case!
How Do You Feel?
Recently read on fastcompany.com, that Facebook has started collaborating with different companies to get the want button up and running. The want button is the newest widget to help Facebook users to connect. This new button will allow users to buy there favorite brands and items directly from Facebook. This is more convenient for everyday Facebook users and companies alike. It will allow companies to target customers, that they know already have brand loyalty. Two companies that are testing out this new widget are Michael Kors and Victoria Secret. This button will also allow users to select items the wish to buy and place it on the wish list. In the article it states “…initiative will not make Facebook any money to start with. If, however, it proves successful, expect it to be harnessed to the firm’s Gifts feature to realise its full pecuniary potential.” How do feel about this new feature? Can you see yourself using it?
Since People, strass and famous excistes, we all have a super idole, the star which let us dream, the one who you dream to see or, knowing what his life is made about. You already see him on movies theater, on tv shows, concert etc..BUT you don’t feel that you know all what you want to know, and you wish to share what she does, with whom, or what jokes your idole does. Now it is possible thanks to TWITTER. With Twitter, you are “aware of what people you like do”. In fact, almost everybody is on twitter, and aspecially Stars, who loves to share informations and pictures about their lives. Lindsay, Britney, Madonna, Rihanna, they are all on Twitter!! and for my own, I love cheking their page when I don’t know what to do.. So what are you waiting for sign up for Twitter?
So today is the day when Facebook claimed everyone’s profiles would be converted to Timeline. While Timeline is a great addition for brands and offers them more space for promotion and marketing, is it as pivotal for personal use? I tried to avoid the switch for quite some time. I’m actually working on a awesome Cover Photo that is in the same vein as the cover of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, so I can finally conform to the demands of Facebook. Beyond the Cover Photo though, I didn’t know much about Timeline, and when I researched it, it appears to be a way to increase “Facebook Creeping.” You can now search through a profile based on dates using an interactive Timeline that runs the length of the profile. There are also more integrations like an updated “Check In” system and updates of currently watched movies or currently read books. With all the changes that are coming, do you think that people will embrace the change or reject it? Personally, how do you all feel about Timeline? How many of you are using it already? Does anyone have any tips for someone like me who is about to crossover into the Timeline Facebook world?
For Spring Break I decided to jetset to Rome to visit one of my best friends who is lucky enough to be studying abroad there. It was an amazing vacation!! The food was incredibly delicious, the sites were beautiful, and the night light was fun. One of my favorite things to do on vacation (really just in general) is to shop. I love to take home souvenirs and pieces that are unique and are not available in the States.
So of course when I went Rome I had to bring back a little bit of Rome with me! The original plan was to go shopping at The Mall which are designer outlets located between Rome and Florence (everything is up to 70% off there so I recommend you go if given the chance!!), unfortunately it was too difficult to get there. So we did some local shopping at small markets and souvenir shops. I snagged some great buys, a very trendy mixed American/British flag scarf, VERY interesting shaped pasta, and absinth. No exactly the shopping trip I was preparing for but definitely well worth it!
At first I was worried about the prices because of the conversion to the Euro, but everything is priced relatively cheap if you are with a Roman that knows where to shop. Always ask where the locals shop, the tourist places are usually not interesting and very expensive. I am determined to make another trip out to Florence in the future to get to The Mall, but for now if anyone has been there before? Please let me know how it is! I am interested in knowing if it is worth the trip.
Hope everyone enjoyed the break as much as I did!!

Hi All!! As you may know, H&M loves to do collaborations with big designers. This season they did a collaboration with Marni, a fun designer. Lots of large retail stores have been doing designer collaborations, Target one of the largest retailers in the US has done collaborations with Missoni and Jason Wu. Its a really good marketing gimmick to boost sales, the designer produces an affordable line exclusively with the retail store and people line up for days to be the first to get their hands on it. In the past H&M has done collaborations with Versace and Jimmy Choo. Both proved to be incredibly successful, and Versace dresses were seen on ebay, just hours after the early morning store opening, selling for $400 and up! H&M only offers these designer collaborations in certain stores, so lots of people are willing to pay the premium. Not a bad profit at all.
I was amongst the crazies that lined up for the Versace for H&M line. A picture of my friends and I was even featured in an article about the Versace line on Racked.Com. Not the most flattering picture I must admit (3rd down in article), but we had been up for over 24 hours, and waited online for over 10 hours!!
So why you ask wasn’t I there for the Marni for H&M line? Well truthfully, I have never heard of this designer and when the look-book came out I was a little skeptical. I was not sure if It was worth waiting online overnight, yet again. However, I got a great tip from the Madison Avenue Spy. She says that instead of paying the sky high premiums on ebay, we should just wait a week. People have a week from purchase to return/exchange designer items. What a smart thinker! I have yet to physically see this line. The line has bold pattern and bright colors, great for this spring! Did anyone else go to the Marni for H&M launch? Was the line good?
Let me know what you thought of it, I am interested in finding out!
Arrivederci, until next time! I am off to Rome for spring break, where I will be on a shopping extravaganza at the Outlets there!! Will let know how it goes when I return. Happy Drinking!!!!

Paris Fashion Week is truly one of the biggest fashion weeks. It is known for its avant-garde styles and presentations, basically a spectacular. The biggest trends to strut down the Parisian runways included CAPES! Yes, they are back and chicier than ever. Some of the brands that presented this new and improved style include Costume National and Johji Yamamoto. Bigger brands such as Lanvin, Balenciaga, and Alexander McQueen have also incorporated this trend into their Fall 2012 couture and ready to wear lines. But it is Costume National and Johji Yamamoto who take home the gold metal for presenting a new innovative twist on the cape.
Other big trends seen in New York, London, and Paris Fashion Week include: Bold Reds, Capes, Floral Print Jeans, Tribal Print, High-cut Slits, Asymmetrical (BIG TREND FOR THIS SPRING/SUMMER TOO!!), and Gaucho Hats.
So you love the trends but can’t afford the hefty prices? Well lucky for you, neither can I. Being a college student and trying to keep up with fashion is no easy task. Here are 6 places to get these fabulous trends without burning a hole through your wallet:
- ASOS : Great for everything from tribal print to gaucho hats. CAPES!
- Urban Outfitters : Asymmetrical and High Slit skirts.
- ZARA : Tribal prints and skirts. Awesome chiffon pants!!
- Forever 21 : Cheapest alternative, not lasting quality but they have all the trends.
- H&M : Lots of bold colors available!!
- Top Shop : A little pricier than the other options, but its the best quality and VERY trendy.
