As I’ve read a few blogs during the course of this semester, I’ve found out about some cool new places in the city. I thought of making a list of some places I love to go to and a few tips to make sure you are up to date with the coolest events happening all year round.
1) The Dry Bar
Need a quick fix for a bad hair day or want to spruce up the look of your hair in a timely and affordable fashion? Then this place is for you. The Dry Bar is a styling only salon that helps customers with their styling needs in 1 hour or less. You can get your hair washed and styled in several different ways for just $40! No matter how long, short, thick, curly or wavy your hair is, they price of the bar stays the same. For me and my long Pocahontas hair, this place is heaven. To top it all, they treat their customers incredibly well and the vibe of this place is so happy.
2) Cafe Lalo
Located on West 83rd street (take the uptown 1 train), this is the perfect place for any occasion. Wether you are hanging out with your friends, out for a romantic evening or want to spend quality family time, this place will cater to all your needs. The staff is incredibly nice and their service is great. There are come cool posters hanging around the cafe which add to the vibe of this place. My favorite items to try is the hazelnut musse cake and the shakes. I would highly recommend this place for a date night.
3) Kate’s Paperie
If you love arts and crafts or want to find some unique paper to wrap your presents, then I would highly recommend that you visit this place. I have spent many hours in this store, looking and going through all the unique textures and patterns their paper comes in. It is a bit pricy but well worth it. You can even get party invitations made from this location. You just have to see how it is during the holiday season.
4) Shakespeare In The Park
Every summer, thousands gather in Central Park to enjoy a memorable evening and wonderful performance. I have yet to attend this but since I will be going this Summer, I thought to share this information to those who might be looking for something to do during May 28-June 30. Plus Jesse Tyler Ferguson from Modern Family will be there!
I absolutely LOVE this place. The food is amazing and the staff is very friendly. Their bread with garlic and olive oil is very delicious and the eggplant ravioli is a must have. It is pricy and the portions are small but because the food is so good and the staff is wonderful you don’t mind paying that much. If they keep the same prices but increase the portions just a bit more, it would be the best italian restorante in NYC
6) Afghan Kebab House # 1
In my opinion the best food in the world is Afghan food. It has just the right amount of spices and flavors without being too overwhelming. I have had Afghan food from several different locations within NYC but Afghan Kebab House # 1 has the best Afghan food. Located between 52nd and 53rd street and 9th avenue, this is one place you must visit if you are dining out. I would highly recommend the Kabuli Palow or the regular chicken breast kebab.
7) Sax Fifth Avenue 3D Holiday Show
I don’t think any city can beat NYC when it comes to the holiday season. It one of the bigest perks of living in this great city. Although I do not celebrate Christmas, there is nothing that I anticipate more. Sax Fifth Avenue has a 3D show on the extrior of the building which is something that needs to be witnessed in person. Since winter is a long time from now, click on the name to see the video and definitely do some YouTube video searching.
8) Pearl Paint
Located in Chinatown, this is one place for you to escape to for your art needs. With 4 stories of endless art supplies, you will surely find what you are looking for. Again this is one of those places where I have spent a good amount of my savings and enjoyed doing so. I always love to take on new projects and come here to complete those projects. Also it’s a 10 minute walk from Kate’s Paperie!
9) Free New York City Concerts
I LOVE going to concerts! Nothing is more fun than going to an event where you favorite band is playing and join people who enjoy the same music as you do. Dancing and singing along to some of your favorite hits is an experience that is worth the hours of standing in a crowded area. Free New York City Concerts update their fans on all the free concerts that are happening in NYC. The benefit of this is you don’t always have money to waste on concert tickets and even if you do, you might not be able to get tickets to see your favorite musicians. Last summer I went to a OneRepublic concert and had the best time ever! I even got to meet Ryan Tedder! This summer I will be going to the Imagine Dragons concert. It’s free so whats better than that!
10) Summer Streets
Summer Streets is an event which happens every year in the month of August. Nearly seven miles of Manhattan streets are open for the public to freely walk, play and run in. From bike riding to yoga classes and many other activities you can join Summer Streets to openly and freely have fun without the worry of crazy NYC traffic. Event are held for 3 Saturdays of the month and each week there are a special events happening within the traffic free 7 miles.
Please do let me know in the comments if you have any recommendations. I would love to know them!
