Let me just start off by saying this is strictly my opinions on what could possibly be a scandal within Sports. Do not take what I say to heart as I can be seriously wrong.
Have you ever believed in something so much, finding out the truth ruined your childhood? For me it started when I learned Wrestling wasn’t real. However that doesn’t stop me from watching one of my most favorite things in the world. In wrestling the outcome of a winner is decided in advance in a story line. The next champion is decided in a marketing strategy to decide the next winner.
I always wondered if this applied to other sports. This past Super Bowl was between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers. While watching the game with my best friends a very interesting topic came up about Ravens Linebacker Ray Lewis. Now the 49ers were the projected team to win this Super Bowl but what if that’s not how the NFL wanted it? Ray Lewis announced before the Super Bowl that this would be his last season as an NFL player. Winning the Super Bowl would make for one of the greatest stories of all time.
Ray Lewis was charged with a double Murder in January of 2000 which would have ended his career as an NFL player. However the case ended in settlement with no jail time. The Ravens went on to win the super bowl the next year crowning Lewis as the MVP. Ray Lewis also has suffered from numerous injuries that shortened many seasons for him. 2002 Now ready to retire what better way to end such a controversial career by winning the Super Bowl as your last NFL game? What a story you can market right? Make a DVD, have the documentary made and aired to just bring the NFL more proceeds as if they aren’t the highest paid sports organization already.
Now to make such a deal someone would have to rig a NFL game. Now I’m not accusing the 49ers of lying down and taking a fall but there were some suspicious plays and calls by refs that are arguable. In the 2nd Quarter of play, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, over threw his receiver Randy Moss right into the hands of Ravens defender Ed Reed for an interception. This play led a drive to a 21-3 lead.
Aside from the power outage to delay the game, the 49ers did being to mount a comeback but to only make a crucial mistake that just about cost them the game. They went for a 2 point conversation instead of the kick for 1. Failing at this, this put the ravens in position to take the win.
In another must win 4th down attempt for the 49ers. a pass play was attempted and missed by their receiver. However a Ravens defender clearly held the other player which should have been pass interference by was not called by refs. The live analyst saw it. Every spectator at home saw it. But none of the refs did? This missed pass gave the ravens the ball with a 1:42 on the clock. Of course the ravens ran the time but there was still a little time left. Now the ravens purposely held the ball in the end zone. This would cause a safety giving the 49ers 2 points with 4 seconds left. Also the ravens would have to kick off back to the 49ers. To many this is a smart plot by the ravens to waste time and kick the ball as far as possible. Now with 4 seconds left. The 49ers could easily fair catch using no time and set up one Hail Mary pass. But instead the kick returner actually attempted to run the ball wasting the 4 seconds that they had, and the 49ers lost 34-31.
This is how I analyze things sometimes only because I think too much. But again this is how far some people would take things to make money in this world today.
