One might think this is dramatic but I would disagree because I’ve never felt closer to death than I did last weekend when I got…(drumroll please) … The flu.
What I thought was just bronchitis was actually the dreaded 3 letter word that now sends a shiver down my spine. I’ve never had the flu before Thursday night…and if I never get it again til the die I die it’ll be too soon.
If you’ve never had the flu before let me explain to you the pain and suffering..although no words on a blog could ever give justice to what I felt.
First the magical journey begins when you’re hit by a 1,000 ton truck. You’re just moseyin’ on by…minding your own business and BAM! Truck. But you aren’t just hit by a truck. That’d be easy. You’re actually hit by a truck and thrown onto a railroad track while the whistle of the train slowly gets closer and closer. You want to get up but everything hurts. Your head is pounding and every muscle aches. Literally even the clothes you are wearing are causing your skin pain and your 103 fever makes the outside world feel like the ice age. You’re freezing…yet sweating at the same time. And then the train steams along and runs you over…and that’s where the real fun begins.
Your lung decides that it wants a change of environment. It doesn’t wanna be imprisoned and trapped inside of your chest anymore…it wants to be free…so you start hacking it up. The cough is intense and hurts so bad there’s
a faint taste of blood with every hack and nothing soothes it or calms it down. Not even 3 bottles of robitussin and 8 pills of NyQuil…
The cough sucks but it’s the little elves that are the real devils. Yes, little elves camp out in the one lung that’s not exiting your throat and they get chilly so what do they decide to do? Build a nice little campfire. But a little fire isn’t enough so they take their matches to the lung and light the bastard up. Now your lung is on fire and burning and the smoke is causing you to cough even more. Only bright side to all the coughing is your abs start to burn like crazy from all the coughing so I’m pretty sure there’s a nice little six pack waiting to reveal itself.
In conclusion I will wake up every day from now on happy to be alive and grateful that it’s another day i don’t have the flu. But if that dreadful day ever comes again..I give all the readers of this permission to find me and shoot me in the face because death would be welcomed rather than going through all that again.
This short film is the first project I ever worked on. I always had a concept I wanted to do to personify Death. I originally got the idea of a man in a room who controls the world through technology. When I was assigned to do a project with nonsynchronous sound I thought it would be the perfect way to tell the story in a both cheap and unique way. One of my good friends and former NYIT student Vaughn Sams was nice enough to help me out by taking on the persona of Death and I personally think he did a dead on job… at least for what I personally envisioned. It was a simple shoot and went very smoothly with only one reshoot necessary. I’m very happy with the way it came out and it’s something I’ll always be happy to have to look back on. I know everyone has a dream and I really think anyone can attain it as long as they chase it. This film will always remind me of a time when I accepted that fact. Hope you enjoy it too.
