“THE FASHION WORLD OF JEAN PAUL GAULTIER” AT THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM
Gaultier is now settled in New York. Indeed, since the 25th of October a huge retrospective of Jean-Paul Gaultier’s work is presented at the Brooklyn museum You can then admire around 130 couture and ready-to-wear designs, from the iconic corset made for Madonna to his incredible punk creations or brides’ dresses. Moreover, we can say that this exhibition is totally alive : 30 models walk through the different rooms as if they were on the catwalk. They also speak to each other, laugh, or shout at the visitors, turning the exhibition into a big show.
The exhibition takes place around seven themes: the « Odyssee », « Le Boudoir », « Les Muses », « Punk Cancan », « A Fleur de peau », « Metropolis », and « Jungle urbaine. Each of those themes recalls a major aspect of Gaultier’s work. Metropolis reminds for instance all his collaborations with the cinema industry. « Jungle Urbaine » echoes his multiethnic interests.
This project; named The Fashion world of Jean Paul Gaultier: from the Sidewalk to the Catwalk“, was launched in 2011 in Montréal, and has already been seen by 1 million people. If Jean-Paul Gaultier was not really enthusiast about the whole idea at the beginning, but he says now that he feels deeply inspired. In April 2014 the exhibition will settled at the Barbican in London, but for now it ‘s happening in New York, it’s time to go!
