For those of you who don’t know, Beyonce has an alter ego she likes to call, “Sasha Fierce”. ”Sasha” comes out when she enters the stage and performs, but Beyonce has really taken her alter ego to another level with her latest single, “Bow Down”. Beyonce, who has always exaggerated the fact that she is a humble person and she has created her entire image around her being a strong, independent woman, has now released a song where the chorus just repeats, “bow down bitches”. This to me kind of just sounds like a disney star trying to break out of their pure “disney image”, and it really surprises me that Beyonce, the most successful singer right now, married to one of the greatest rapper of our time, who has just also had a baby chooses NOW to release a song with absolutely no depth and that defies her character. She knows she is “Queen Bey”, so why convey it in such a forward, and harsh way?
Beyonce’s past work has had completely different meanings and connotations. With songs like, ‘Run the World (Girls)’, ‘Single Ladies’, ‘If I Were A Boy’, and ‘Irreplaceable’, she has empowered women with her lyrics and has taken a feminist approach. With ‘Bow Down’, she does the complete opposite. I understand that Beyonce doesn’t have to be this feminist voice in all of her songs, it is just the way she went about it, that was so ineloquent, that really shocked me. This song slightly reminded me of Alicia Keys’ latest single, ‘Girl on Fire’ which is about herself, accomplishing all that she has dreamed of and more. Alicia also has started a family in the past year or so and is one of Beyonce’s competitors. I am wondering if Beyonce’s single had anything to do with Alicia’s sending a message that ‘She’s been on’ and she is on top.
Some celebrities spoke about Beyonce’s new song, ‘Bow Down’ with similar feelings. Nicole Scherzinger, judge of the X Factor and Pussy Cat Doll lead singer, says she doesn’t “know what to make of it quite yet. I am probably Beyonce’s biggest fan. I love Bey, I think she’s Queen Bey for sure, nobody can touch her, but I don’t know”.
We all love Beyonce, but this song to me, is not up to par with her others. Also her new tour is called ‘The Mrs. Carter Tour’ which I find very interesting since she quotes in ‘Bow Down’ “I took some time to live my life, but don’t think I’m just his little wife, don’t get it twisted…”. Beyonce still reigns as Queen in my book but I am hoping that the rest of her CD will be more of her usual self.
I definitely shared some strong opinions, so what are your thoughts? I am curious to hear other views!
