A Social Media for Business Class Experiment

The Frying Dutchman

Back when I first moved to New York City in the fall of 2010 one of my favorite aspects of the city was the food. I loved food to begin with but the diversity and frequency of which I could get my hands on them truly rocked my world. I also quickly became a fan of the food carts scattered around street corners everywhere (I love lamb over rice, white sauce, pita mixed in). More so though I became a huge fan of food trucks, their images, design, and marketing was something I was real interested in. On one of those first fall afternoons in the city I found my white whale of food trucks.

One day I stepped out of my apartment, which is on Broadway and, only for an instant, my roommate and me saw the truck whiz by us. The side of the truck in giant, French fry shaped letters, read: The Frying Dutchman. I’m a sucker for creative branding. The name alone sparked my interest. Living in 2010 I obviously did what everyone does when they have a question. I asked Google. From there I was directed to their Twitter page, which said they only made fries and many unique sauces with which to pair the fries. The locations were scattered around and literally varied day by day. Since there were so many more good eats in the city I forgot about the truck.

Until recently, the Dutchman had gone all to the back of my mind. One day though, while working at Apple on the Upper West Side, everyone was eating burgers for lunch on a Saturday. They told me there was a truck outside with great burgers and fries. I decided to check it out and it was The Frying Dutchman. I was ecstatic. Especially since they expanded their menu to include burgers and chicken sandwiches. I ordered for my girlfriend, my roommate, and myself and order one of each of the five delicious sauces. When it came time to pay I was even happier. He was offering 25% off for Apple employees. The food lived up to the hype I had given it for over a year. The sandwiches were amazing but it was the fries that were truly the winner. If you ever see this truck, even for a fleeting moment, make sure you catch it.
