“ Fate mixes the cards and we play ”

A couple days ago, I had a very interesting conversation with a girlfriend about fate. She told me that it was difficult for a man to escape his fate. That fate was omnipresent in our lives, proved by its innumerable coincidences taking place before our eyes without understanding how it could happen. You know, those moments when you think of someone that you have not seen in years and it suddenly appears at the crossroads or in the same subway car. It gives you a strange feeling, as if there was someone up there listening to you. Which is crazy with destiny is that everyone knows that feeling. Do not tell me otherwise. What is it? Where does it come from? Why nobody has the power to prove it? I did my research and that is what I found.

First step, I googled it. Its definition is: “Destiny or fate is a predetermined course of events. It may be conceived as a predetermined future, whether in general or of an individual. It is a concept based on the belief that there is a fixed natural order to the cosmos.” I didn’t get it. Does it mean that someone has a book with every moment of our life written in it? Who has decided to put destiny in every people life? Apparently, it goes back to mythology. Destiny was a blind divinity coming of night and chaos. All other deities were subjected to her. That’s why Oedipus couldn’t escape to his fate, when he killed his father and married her mother.

After doing my research, my mind was confused. It’s so easy to believe on destiny. It’s comforting sometimes, but don’t you think we cannot control it? Is this really a fatality? Some shrinks think that is not hazard but synchronicity: “The simultaneous occurrence of two independent events connected by meaning.” They say that These serendipity comes from our choices, our environment, our friends, our family, our personality, not the cosmos. Human being is master of his fate if he wishes. Should we not believe in this version instead of fate? Why are not we able to get ahead in life, to control these facts, good or bad? It is clear that belief in fate is a reassuring thought, but also frightening since in both cases we must be active, not passive. I think the title of my article says all about my thought. We should be active and move on, make things happen the way we want it. Choose between being a creator or an observer.
